How Somi Played Two Personas In One Song

Hey, k-dreamers! Have you ever had feelings for someone who just couldn’t take the hint? I definitely have (but then again, my hints were probably too subtle). People usually say that the direct approach is the best way to get results, but we’re not going to see that today. This week, Somi is back and ready to bat her eyelashes in “Dumb Dumb”.

Somi is manipulative but in a harmless way.

The lyrics paint things out pretty plainly. Somi likes this guy and she’s trying to act sweetly in order to meet his expectations and get his attention. But when we peel back the facade, we reveal that Somi is not as sweet as she is claiming to be.

Nah, I aint got time for that
Tried to act the part and rewind it back
Over and over, show’s over, take or leave
It’s make love or, make believe

Acting like someone else and dropping the subtlest of hints that you like them doesn’t sound like a good idea. You may end up in Somi’s situation. Although I don’t have my eye on anyone in particular, I will try to remember that people aren’t mind readers and be more straightforward about my feelings when the time comes. Imagine if that guy in the music video knew what was going on in Somi’s mind. Yikes.

When you’ve had enough Dumb Dumb for a day…

We see these two personas reflected through the instrumentation. When she puts on her act, we hear a piano play staccato chords on every beat. When she’s being herself, the piano is replaced with a throbbing synth. By the end of “Dumb Dumb”, Somi explodes with exasperation. What started as a mumble has turned into a shout and she can’t stand pretending anymore. The texture becomes fuller with stronger percussion on every beat, just like the piano. So I guess she went with the direct approach after all!

Honourable Mentions: Dreamcatcher – BEcause, Weeekly – Holiday Party, BewhY – Celebration, CherryB – OOTD (Is anyone else reminded of Tori Kelly when they hear CherryB’s voice?)

Fun and quirky Somi is the best Somi, in my humble opinion. Do you think “Dumb Dumb” is her best song to date? Let me know in the comments!
