Hey, k-dreamers! Heard any good news lately? Maybe you found out that ONEUS got their first win recently? It was with this specific song that they won. What makes “LUNA” such a great song? Let’s take a look!
“LUNA” blends the traditional and the modern.
When I first listened to this song, I only heard the chorus. It surprised me to hear the traditional music style in the beginning. I even had to listen to the song again to figure out how they transitioned between styles so fast. It turns out, they just use the drum beat to lead into the chorus. The two styles also blend together through RAVN’s autotuned vocals and the traditional music ensemble in full swing taking over the instrumental.
ONEUS also play with suspense in this song. When the second chorus comes around, they only hit certain beats instead of all of them like in the first chorus. If you were like me, you expected it to only last for the first few bars. However, this goes on until halfway through the chorus. Kinda reminds me of another group from RBW. One of the many things that are great about “LUNA” is the ability for ONEUS to keep me on the edge of my seat.
ONEUS represent Korea with style.
I’m not too familiar with Korean traditional instruments, but at least I can tell my reeds from my strings. “LUNA” begins with the sounds of a plucked gayageum. Whether it’s strummed or plucked, I’ve been loving the sound of string instruments lately. Another addition to the song that I liked was the pansori singer. It’s a nice way to escalate the song in the final chorus.
