‘Sup, k-dreamers! I don’t know about you, but I need a break from life. With school back in session, I have many more things on my plate on top of running this website. Good thing us kpop lovers have groups like MAMAMOO to release fun songs like “mumumumuch” to brighten things up.
MAMAMOO do their best work when they’re having fun.
Fans of MAMAMOO (moomoos) are aware of how the members put their personality into their songs and “mumumumuch” is no different. It always sounds like the members have fun recording the songs. For example, I would normally be put off if someone suddenly growled while calling themselves a beast. Yet, when Wheein does it, it’s too darn cute (if you follow my social media, then you know how much I love Wheein). Even Hwasa commenting “Gosh, what a romantic” sounds like a line only she could deliver. This girl group is quite the unique one.
The instrumental is as playful as they are.
The best way to add a little bit of fun into your song is to have small interjections in your songs. Some cowbell here, a “ya!” or an “ow!” there, and you have a playful tune to put a smile on your face. “mumumumuch” is chock-full of cute interjections, even having a bit of aegyo before the final chorus.
I love how much they play with suspense in this song. One of my favourite parts in the instrumental is the silence between the first chorus and the next verse. Instead of jumping back into the beat, there’s silence while Hwasa sings “In love for the first time”. And when we expect for the beat to come back after that line, it doesn’t immediately do that. It takes a few more beats, subverting our expectations and tickling our ears (or just mine). MAMAMOO really know how to have fun when falling in love.
Honourable Mentions: Ateez – Deja Vu, Seori ft. eaJ – Dive With You, Bang Chan & Hyunjin – Red Lights (The audio for the “Dive With You” music video seems a bit off. The official audio doesn’t peak as much compared to it.)
If you like this song, check out: Weki Meki – Crush (2018), BTS ft. Halsey – Boy With Luv (2019), Sunmi – pporappippam (2020)
When I heard that MAMAMOO were remaking some of their greatest hits, I was over the moon. What remakes have you checked out from their greatest hits album? Let me know in the comments!
