The Eurovision Song Contest is creeping up on us slowly but surely. Guess that means I should listen to the last 6 entries already. We are finally checking out Theodor Andrei (Romania), Piqued Jacks (San Marino), Luke Black (Serbia), Iru (Georgia), Alessandra (Norway), and Marco Mengoni (Italy).
Lyrics: Her smile awakes the northern light
I love the fact Alessandra is leaning into her Nordic side for her entry. She also makes it interesting by putting an EDM twist. Upon hearing the lyrics, I was immediately drawn in by the imagery. I can’t wait to see Alessandra perform, especially that high note at the end. Speaking of high notes, let’s talk about Piqued Jacks. They seem to have developed a cult following with their song “Like An Animal.” While it’s not my favourite musical style, I’ll admit that I’ve warmed up to it after a few listens. But the thing that bothers me about the lyrics is that it doesn’t seem to build to anything. There’s this girl… and? It’s a relatively minor gripe but it’s just something I noticed.
Music: I like it better when I dream
When I heard Luke Black’s entry for the first time, I think my jaw dropped to the floor. It felt like I was witnessing art. My favourite thing about this entry is the video game aesthetic. It’s not only reflected in the performance but also in the music. The boss battle sampling and the 8-bit music complete the package for me. I was a little worried about the music to singing ratio until I remembered that “Nocturne” won Eurovision in 1995. Another thing I wanted to highlight was the use of vocal chopping in Iru’s “Echo.” It’s very addicting to listen to, but I also understand if she can’t sing that live. She has a beautiful voice, by the way. I only wish the song made more sense lyrically. Here’s hoping she qualifies anyways.
Vocals: Make love, not war
Theodor Andrei sings a mean rock ballad. He has a nice texture to his voice which really suits the genre. I’m noticing that climactic high notes are the trend this round. I have a feeling the voodoo doll choreography is going to be a hit during the contest. As a change of pace, we have Marco Mengoni with the second beautiful ballad in a row from Italy. With his captivating voice, Italy might have the classiest entry of the competition. Although, it still doesn’t top “Brividi” in my heart.
