Give That Wolf A Banana – Subwoolfer
These lyrics are really something, huh? I can imagine this song being a demo with the lyrics being some random top-line, except they decided to just run with it. Either way, if this song came on, I wouldn’t be able to explain why I’m listening to it. But… his voice is kinda nice actually? And the drop is really good? I’m so confused. This entry is sure to make everyone dance. I also heard that Subwoolfer know how to put on a live performance. Another interesting thing to note is that the song ends one measure earlier than expected. I guess it’s so that the song ends with Keith.
Sekret – Ronela Hajati
Ronela Hajati’s voice is a lot deeper than I was expecting. The duality in her voice as she sings higher and lower is the thing that stands out the most in this entry. It’s a lot more subtle, but this song has that latin pop beat. Not that that’s bad or anything. I think if you liked “Mata Hari” from last year, you’ll like this song. Overall, I don’t have strong feelings for this song.
Breathe – Vladana
My first Montenegrin entry review! This song is reminiscent of “Once Upon A December” from the movie Anastasia. I like the triple meter in this song. Honestly, when it comes to ballads, I’m probably not the best person to ask for an opinion. While Vladana has a beautiful voice, I don’t particularly connect to the lyrics. Perhaps it’s because I abided by the rules during the pandemic so I already understand the importance of air. I don’t know to feel about the “sweat of the storm” either. But I know this entry has a deep meaning to Vladana, so I wish her the best of luck.
Not The Same – Sheldon Riley
This entry wastes no time in conveying overwhelming emotions. I think the lyrics are the strongest point of this entry. My favourite part of the song is the bridge. I love the way he strings all of the lines together to really build the tension of the song. I also agree with the song’s message:
So you go and leave the pain and find another way
To make yourself another game
Maybe one for all to play
‘Cause it’s not just me who’s not the same
We’re not the same
Again, when it comes to ballads, I’m never sure how well they will do in competitions. Let’s hope Sheldon Riley’s performance stands out above the rest.
The Show – Reddi
They had me in the first half, not gonna lie. This is the second year in a row that Denmark has submitted an entry that invoked such nostalgia. Reddi kinda remind me of Josie and the Pussycats. Since it’s what I grew up listening to, I have a soft spot for this entry. I am a total sucker for pop rock. The lyrics, however, are a little cliché for my taste. It might still work to their advantage if they are indeed going for the nostalgic vibe.
Who has my vote (for now)?
I’m gonna have to go with Subwoolfer this week. To be honest, I really didn’t want to like this song. I visibly contorted my face in confusion when listening to the song for the first time. I can’t deny that this entry is a certified bop, even if I still cringe listening to it. I’m interested to see how this song ranks overall. They’ll make it into the finals, I’m sure of it. I’ll see you next week!
